XLN Audio – Black Velvet ADpak review

I’m back again, and this time we are going to look at the new Adpack for the XLN Audio Addictive drums that goes by the name Black Velvet ADpak.

Before we start, I would like to thank XLN Audio for letting me do this review.

The Black Velvet ADpak is the sound you always wished you could afford! A modern classic dressed in black captured with a large, epic sound. Created with the grunge/post-grunge era in mind, with roots in alternative rock transcending to an expensive arena rock-band sound, this takes you on a journey from Seattle to LA. This ADpak is made with the highest demands on everything throughout the whole recording chain, capturing the unmistakable raw attitude in a luxurious package.

The Black Velvet ADpak features a DW Collector’s Series kit, it was recorded at the Kingside Studios Stockholmn with Jakob Möller by the drums.

For anyone who have read my Addictive drums review or if you have it, then will know that it is fast to load and uses very little resources, and this does not change when using the Black Velvet ADpak. Even with many of the built in FX in use on all channels and the two Reverbs on Toms and Snares the CPU only hits 5% during playback with a buffer size of 128 on my interface!

The Black Velvet ADpak is a modern punk / rock kit that offers a kick with both punch and roundness a Snare that is crispy and still have a nice snappy sound.
The 4 included Toms have a mix of snap and bottom so they can stand out when creating Tom groves and fills that need separation to not mud up the mix.

The character of the kit rely changes when we start adjusting the the Kick in / out and Snare Top / Bottom sliders, i like how this little feature maxes such an impact on the sound.
It once again strikes me how well sounding and flexible Addictive drums is, especially when we look at the computer resources it uses.

When it comes to Presets XLN Audio really nailed it, The Black Velvet ADpak comes with a stunning 40 producer presets.

But how does it sound?
Well here is a small little something i put together in Studio One using the two presets from Morten and also in action is XLN audio´s Addictive Keys.

XLN Audio really brought life to Addictive drums with the Black Velvet ADpak, It has that modern Punk / rock sound but can be tweaked for a lot of different styles.
There is not much to think about here people!!
If you own Addictive drums and want a a nice sounding kit, grab the Black Velvet ADpak!!
