The be Quiet! SILENT WINGS 2 comes in a very nice black booklet box, that gives a great first impression of quality. On the front a image of the  SILENT WINGS 2 is shown, the back gives us key features and specifications.

Here is how be quiet! describes the SILENT WINGS 2

SilentWings 2 fans provide the greatest performance-to-noise ratio and highest reliability on the market. They achieve their virtually silent operation without sacrificing airflow, and so offer the perfect balance between superior cooling and serenity as low as 15.7 dB(A).

Their secret: a unique airflow-optimized fan blade design, custom anti-vibration mounts, and a high-tech fluid dynamic bearing with copper core for greatly reduced noise and super-long life.

SilentWings 2 fans are your best choice for any application that requires ultimately quiet operation and uncompromised performance.

The SILENT WINGS 2 does look great with it´s black finish.

Installation.
The SILENT WINGS 2 comes with two different mounting systems, so before installation we have to know what is best four our case, in my Define R3 I had to use the plastic mounting with screws for the SILENT WINGS 2 when mounted as intake fas but I could use the rubber and push-pin when mounting the SILENT WINGS 2 as exhaust fan.

The rubber mounting is well made and be quiet! thought things through as depending on your needs the rubber mounting can be mounted in two ways.

pushpin

•    When inserted in direction “L”, there is a 1mm gap between the case and the fan frame. This provides the greatest possible isolation.

•    When inserted in direction “S”, the fan frame is directly against the case.
The isolation is now achieved through the rubber fan frame.                        Source

Testing
My test system
Case: Fractal Design Define R3
CPU: I7 930 With Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3 (rev 2.0)
Ram: 24 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3
System hard drive: PLEXTOR PX-128MR SSD
Storage and project hard drive : Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB

Since be quiet! where kind to send me two SILENT WINGS 2 I was able to do my tests with them simultaneously, my first test was done with the included Multi-voltage adapter. Now I don’t have any way to measure the actual airflow so I had to use HW monitor to see if there is any changes to the temperatures of my PC components.
I ran the 12v/7v/5v settings for 20 minutes and stressed the system with prime 95 blend mode, after each test I Shut down my PC for 30 min to let it cool of.

Intake V Exhaust V CPU max Temp NB Temp Noise
12 V 12 V 63c 55c Audible
7v 7v 66 57c Inaudible
5v 5v 70 58c Inaudible

Now when I say Audible, I have to state that it is not noisy, I could pick up the fan doing its job but it is no way near NOISY!!! even on max RPM the fan operates with very little sound generated. There is also a difference depending on placement, when placed as exhaust the SILENT WINGS 2 is a bit more audible then when placed as intake.
Now this is not uncommon as when placed as exhaust the case fan grill ads resistance to the airflow that in most cases cause a bit more noise.

The next step Is to find the sweet spot for the SILENT WINGS 2, I used the Scythe Kaze Master Flat to find the max RPM where the SILENT WINGS 2 still is inaudible.
for exhaust the SILENT WINGS 2 was inaudible up to about 1150RPM this is very nice, The intake reached a impressive 1260RPM before I could pick up any sound from the fan.

Conclusion.
If you ask anyone that knows me, they would tell you I am very picky when it comes to PC noise, during my years I have tested allot of different fans and I know what brands to use and what brands to stay away from when building a quiet PC.
I have to be honest and tell you that I have little experience with be quiet! products but after testing the 120mm SILENT WINGS 2 I wonder why!! and I hope to be able to test more of their products.

be quit! has a first class 120mm fan in the SILENT WINGS 2, with flexible mounting options, great performance and near silent operation. I am impressed with the SILENT WINGS 2.
The 120mm SILENT WINGS 2 can be found for around at around £18/€19,90, a price a bit on the higher side but then again you get a great quality fan for the price.

Pros

  • Great look
  • Near silent operation
  • flexible mounting solution
  • great performance

Cons

  • A bit high price tag

Hi Dawfreak – how do these be-quiet fans compare – noise wise – to the Noctua NF-P12 and NF-F12 fans ? Ben

    • August 6, 2012 at 4:13 pm

When i tested the be quiet they where used as case fans. And for case fans they are more quiet then the Noctua. So if you are going to get case fans the Be quiet! Will be more quiet.
